UK visa photo
gov.uk’s guidance on visa photos (updated 12 February 2026) asks for a portrait photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 tall, between 50 KB and 6 MB, as a JPG. The 6 MB ceiling is lower than the passport’s 10 MB, so a file that works for one may not work for the other.
As with the passport photo, a landscape photo is refused rather than cropped to a ratio gov.uk didn’t give. A portrait photo is kept uncropped, capped at 4096 pixels on the long side, and saved at the highest JPEG quality under 6 MB.

This fixes the file — size, shape and format. It doesn’t check the photo itself (background, lighting, expression, glasses), which the portal also has rules for.
